Saint Patrick and the Blessed Virgin Mary
Saint Patrick and the Blessed Virgin Mary
The image of the Virgin Mary located in Gyor cathedral in Hungary shed tears of blood for three hours. It was on 17th March, 1697 on the feast of Saint Patrick. This painting is known under the name of The Weeping Irish Madonna. It took place during the persecution of the Catholic Church led by Olivier Cromwell when all bishops and priests had to leave Ireland. The original name of the image was Our Lady Consoler of the Afflicted. The painting was brought to Hungary by the Bishop Walter Lynch of Clonfert who fled Ireland escaping persecutions.
There is a document signed by direct witnesses of the mircale at that time, amongst whom were Catholic priests and lay people as well as Lutheran Protestants, Calvinists, and even a Jewish rabbi.
